‘My Green Home’ (Jan-Mar 2020)

My Green Home’ has been a great step forward in developing our society as environment friendly nation to successfully address the hazardous effects of climate change. Thousands of students joined the activity with their families and learnt newer modern ways of environmental conservation which could be their wonderful contribution in the making of an environment friendly Pakistan and the world in the years to come.

We at Green Living Association extend our gratitude to everyone who joined ‘My Green Home’ with the spirit of learning newer ways to successfully address the global challenge of climate change. GLA is going to present a participation certificate to each Green Angel to recognize your remarkable step forward towards environmental conservation. There are hundreds of more prizes, some of those are mentioned below, but remaining are to be communicated to the respective campuses through emails.

However, it is important to remember that our real success is not about the prizes and rewards, as, these are the minor part of the greater objective of fighting the climate change. We thank all of our Green Partners; the schools’ directors, administrators, the teachers, dear Green Angels and obviously the parents – for their commitment to make a Greener Pakistan and therefore a Cleaner and Greener Planet.

During the next few days we are going to complete the process of informing every participating campus by email about each campus’ results and prizes

Global climate change has already had observable effects on the environment. Glaciers have shrunk, ice on rivers and lakes is breaking up earlier, plant and animal ranges have shifted and trees are flowering sooner.

Effects that scientists had predicted in the past would result from global climate change are now occurring: loss of sea ice, accelerated sea level rise and longer, more intense heat waves. Scientists have high confidence that global temperatures will continue to rise for decades to come, largely due to greenhouse gases produced by human activities. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which includes more than 1,300 scientists from all parts of the world, forecasts a temperature rise of 2.5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit over the next century.

Pakistan is extremely vulnerable to climate change impacts because of its geographical location, high population and low technological and resource base. The projected impacts of climate change include threat to its water security, food security and energy security. It is high time to take stock of country’s situation in relation to climate change to visualize measures for achieving sustained economic growth. Climate change poses a great threat to gains made in poverty reduction and development in Pakistan. While climate change is a global phenomenon, its impacts are felt more severely by the developing world due to their greater vulnerabilities and lesser capacity to manage the effects of climate change, and similarly, within society, by marginal and vulnerable groups including women and children.

Green Living Association has introduced ‘My Green Home’ activity for the students from preschool to 12th grade to transform individuals’ potential into collective societal development. My Green Home is a highly creative and jointly organised activity which inspires students and their families to develop their homes into eco-homes having the capacity of producing their own energy, meeting their water needs, producing zero waste and making their own bio-fuel for their kitchens. With the help provided by the GLA’s guidebooks the families can easily change their focus to sustainability by bringing simple changes in their lifestyles to make a big difference at national level.

In making the activity even more inspiring GLA has announced a wide range of lucrative prizes and awards for the participants besides offering Green Certification. Exclusive prizes include Rs. 100,000 Cash Prize, Laptops, LED Monitors, Laptop Cooling Stands, Gold and Silver Medals, Campus Winners Prizes, Green Angels Insignias and Honour Shields.

My Green Home is part of GLA’s 3rd five yearly campaign ‘Collective Action to Address Climate Change’ (CATCH 2017-21) which aims at imparting practical Environmental Education firstly to students and then from students to their families and thereby to all societal segments. ‘My Green Home’ offers basic environmental science concepts, especially how human activity has led to climate change and global warming, and how our focused and planned action could effectively address the challenge. Such an inspiration developed by the activity has great potential of transforming the lives of the young Green Angels in many ways, such as:

  1. Development of the young children into altruistic and responsible beings to secure environment
  2. Transmission of families’ inspiration into the development of their residences into eco-homes to reduce their carbon footprint in saving the planet from Global Warming and thereby Climate Change.
  • Motivation for Green Angels on receiving exceptional recognition in form of outstanding prizes including My Green Home’ Certification for every Green Angel.
